Trinidad and Tobago Way of Life

Many travelers view Trinidad and Tobago as a go-to spot for an unforgettable Carnival experience. While this is 100% true, these Caribbean islands have far more to offer. If you appreciate heavenly beaches, food, and culture…book that trip to T&T!

Palm trees line the peaceful beaches of Tobago.

Charisma is contagious on these islands lying just off the Venezuelan shore. Over the years conquest and power have gathered a unique mix of international cultures. The original inhabitants were indigenous Carib and Arawak…but visit the islands in 2018 and you’ll find Indian, Lebanese, Chinese, and a handful of African and European influences.

Island sunset behind the palms on Tobago.

My trip was shorter than desired, but a long weekend was ample time to relish in some of that Caribbean island fever.

Pigeon Point | Tobago

Pigeon Point Palms. Trinidad and Tobago.

Pigeon Point is a picturesque Tobagoan nature reserve and beach you’ve probably seen without even knowing it. White sand is graced with local shops and complimentary huts for visitors. Get there early enough to grab a chair and “lime”.

Soca | Soul of Calypso

Liming at the villa in Tobago.

Soca is as Caribbean as it gets. Rooted in marginalized Trinidadians, the melodic island sound has branched into various specialties suiting every dancer. It’s fairly easy to find a dance club where the intoxicating calypso sounds eat the night away. If you’re brave enough, “whine” up with the locals.

Maracas Bay | Trinidad

Maracas Bay on the island of Trinidad.

The popular beach in Trinidad is Maracas Bay. Tucked away on the lush, mountainous coast you’ll find local families settled up under the palm trees. It’s a great place to show off your surfing skills.

Bake and Shark | Trinidad

Bake and Shark is done best at Richard’s on Maracas Bay.

Street food in T&T is top notch and “Bake And Shark” is king. Envision fried bread filled with fried shark, lemon juice, onion, garlic, thyme, pineapple, and assortment of special sauces. (Yes…it sounds like bacon, but don’t set yourself up for disappointment. It’s offered without the crispy pig.)

Lime and Whine | Trinidad and Tobago

Liming in Tobago with my main squeeze Zizu.

In Trinidad & Tobago, liming is living. You’ll find that locals use the word describe many different activities. Use it wisely to gain some street cred. Most importantly, remember you aren’t actually liming if it’s not done with a peaceful mind.

The Caribbean way of life.

While you’re in the Caribbean region be sure to stop in Cuba or Costa Rica for more fun in the sun!
